I have been forwarded your email by my mum. I have read it with tears in my eyes. What a beautiful concept and it's very interesting how apt this is to my life at this moment in time.
I very recently said goodbye to my dear Aunty Jude who died of cancer in February. She was amongst many other things a talented textile artist and often referred to your work as inspiration in our conversations.
When she died I worked with my grief in the imagining of a cloak. This is a project that I am working on, hand sewn, exploring the weight of grief and it's lightness.
It is so interesting to read your email, as the timing is uncanny. I am also going to be visiting Australia in two years to visit my cousin, my departed aunt's son, who so beautifully honoured her death with a very individual and perfect funeral.
I would love to participate in your project, and how strange it is that I will be visiting Australia that year you would like to exhibit.
Mysterious ways indeed…and I’m sorry about your auntie. Let me know if you are planning to visit the exhibition … perhaps we can meet for a cup of tea…
Thank you India! What a heartfelt project to be involved with… remembrance is such a valuable honouring of so very many. The peace of stitching memories gives solace to the soul. I will participate with joy and gifts from our Mother Earth…. Warmest wishes to all participants 💖
I am honoured to take part, in remembrance of those past family members both recent and historical. I am often reminded that o am on this earth because ancestors overcame trials, survived unimaginable trauma and watched the sun go down and then be reborn each day just as we do now. Thank you for the opportunity! Jayne
Count me in India - it sounds a beautiful project. I already have my own leaf dyed wrapping cloth/shroud but as yet have not started stitching on it! And I’d love to come and help stitch the pieces together if I can manage it ❤️🙏🪡
Thank you India, I'd love to take part. It will be such a special project to be part to be able to remember all those special people & places throughout the world, and the many silent voices.
I am excited to participate! I do have one question for clarification: is the stitching and fabric stitched on completely neutral as in undyed threads and undyed cloth? I am asking because although those appear to be the instructions to interested participants, your proposal seems to state otherwise, unless I am misunderstanding something. For example, under the heading "beloved" you mention plant-dyed, (not undyed) etc.
my own work in the exhibition will be plant-dyed…the work that comes in from around the world will be sewn to a backing cloth (that I will supply) but remain undyed.
Thank you for the clarification! One further question for further clarification: does it have to be white undyed thread on white (undyed) fabric or can it be white thread on natural linen (undyed) fabric. Basically, is some contrast allowed via an undyed natural thread upon an undyed but natural cloth, such as linen? Or is it to be white on white?
Yet another wonderful, creative collaborative project! Thanks, India, I'd love to be a contributor. I plan to stitch the thoughts and images swirling my head.
Your work will not be over-dyed…by keeping the community work undyed it will provide a foil to the pieces I am working on. An almost luminous focal point by contrast…

Good question…cloth and thread can be unbleached/natural…
Thank you!
Are we to stitch only and send it undyed to you? Then you will dye everything at once?
the pieces that drift in from around the world will be sewn to a backing cloth (that I will supply) but remain undyed.
I think it will be more powerful that way.
This is a beautiful collaboration to help soothe a troubled world

Sounds beautiful - reaching for the undyed scraps bag as we speak!

Let me make sure I understand. We do the stitching (including perhaps beads or buttons), you will do the dyeing. Yes?
Your work will not be over-dyed…by keeping the community work undyed it will provide a foil to the pieces I am working on. An almost luminous focal point by contrast…
This sounds amazing. Brings warmth to my heart. Count me in.
