As many of you will know, I have had a long association with Fabrik, the former Onkaparinga Woollen Mill presently being redeveloped into a series of purpose-built galleries, workshop and artist studio spaces. I’ve had the pleasure of participating in several group exhibition, installing my own solo show there and most recently, coordinating two major international textile projects there; ‘quiet conversations :: in place’ in 2021, and ‘gardens of the heart’ in 2019.
Fabrik has been undergoing major reconstruction, adapting the site to make it welcoming, accessible and fit for purpose as a cultural hub whose major focus is on textiles, and as a consequence has been closed to the public … happily though, things are on track for a re-opening in (fingers crossed) March 2024 and I am delighted to be able to share with you that a seed I planted with them (for another worldwide community exhibition) has sprouted.
You are all invited to be present.
present aims to create an offering of creativity, connection and a coming together in stitches, to celebrate Fabrik’s new beginning. Hand stitched self-portraits from all over the world will be installed en masse in the newly redeveloped Fabrik space, bringing the faces of a world-wide textile community together in Lobethal, Australia, for this special re-opening event.
I do so hope you will join!
How to be involved:
Look at your reflection, make a contour drawing on paper, transfer it to a handkerchief of your choice (it can be from thrift, or new, or one of your own . . . any of these options so long as it’s clean!) and stitch the outline. Fold and place inside an envelope and mail or deliver to Fabrik, (see address below). Lastly, you’ll need to view the registration form here and share a few words about your stitching and yourself.

Exactly how the portraits will be displayed will depend on how many are received. In my dreams I am seeing them stitched together in great sails…but who knows?
Shall you be present ? I hope so.
Wow my Absolutely. Sails sound so wonderful, as a display.
"In a sea of differing moods to match the climates of constant change, our sails open with living arms ready to embrace new horizons."
Done!
